As the summer heat begins to wane and the leaves start to change, the transition to fall presents the perfect opportunity to refresh and revitalize your living space. One of the most effective ways to prepare for the upcoming season is by decluttering your home and getting rid of unnecessary items that may have accumulated over time. Fall is a time of change, and by clearing out the clutter, you not only create a more organized environment but also set the stage for a cozy and welcoming autumn. Here’s why and how you should consider decluttering BEFORE fall arrives:

1. Embrace the New Season with a Fresh Start: Fall represents a new chapter, a time to transition from the carefree days of summer to a more introspective and cozy atmosphere. By decluttering your space, you’re symbolically letting go of the past and making room for the opportunities that lie ahead. This process of renewal can be incredibly invigorating, setting a positive tone for the upcoming season.

2. Create a Cozy and Inviting Atmosphere: As the temperature drops, you’ll likely be spending more time indoors. Clearing out excess clutter not only makes your living space more organized but also allows you to create a warm and inviting ambiance. With fewer items competing for attention, you can focus on adding fall-inspired décor and cozy accents that reflect the season’s spirit.

3. Streamline Your Wardrobe: The change in seasons is an excellent time to go through your wardrobe and curate your clothing collection. Put away your summer attire and assess your fall and winter clothing. Take this opportunity to donate or sell clothes that no longer fit or suit your style. A pared-down wardrobe makes getting dressed in the morning easier and more enjoyable.

4. Prepare for Indoor Activities: Fall often brings a shift toward indoor activities such as reading, crafting, and cooking. Clearing out clutter provides you with designated spaces for these activities. Create a cozy reading nook, set up a crafting corner, or organize your kitchen to make the most of your indoor endeavors.

5. Boost Mental Clarity: A cluttered space can lead to a cluttered mind. Decluttering your surroundings has been shown to reduce stress and increase focus. As you prepare for the fall season, take the opportunity to clear out distractions and create an environment that promotes mental clarity and relaxation.

6. Simplify Cleaning and Maintenance: Fall is synonymous with seasonal cleaning, and having a clutter-free space can significantly simplify this process. With fewer items to maneuver around, cleaning becomes more efficient, allowing you to spend less time tidying up and more time enjoying the crisp autumn air.

7. Give Back to the Community: Decluttering doesn’t mean throwing everything away. Consider donating gently used items to local charities or shelters. Your unwanted belongings could be someone else’s treasure. This act of kindness not only benefits you by freeing up space but also supports your community.

How to Declutter and Get Rid of Unnecessary Junk Before Fall:

Set Clear Goals: Decide which areas of your home need the most attention and set achievable goals for each space.

Sort and Categorize: Start by categorizing items into three groups: keep, donate/sell, and discard. Be honest about what you truly need and use.

One Area at a Time: Tackle one room or even one section of a room at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Use the Four-Box Method: Keep four boxes or bags handy labeled “Keep,” “Donate/Sell,” “Trash,” and “Undecided.” Sort items accordingly.

Be Very Selective: When deciding what to keep, ask yourself if each item brings value or joy to your life. If not, it might be time to let go.

Set a Time Limit: To prevent procrastination, set a timer for each decluttering session. Stick to the timer and focus on the task at hand.

Involve the Family: If you share your living space, involve your family members in the decluttering process. It can be a bonding experience that yields better results.

Dispose Responsibly: Properly dispose of items that cannot be donated or sold. Recycle where possible and dispose of hazardous materials responsibly.

It goes without saying that when you declutter and get rid of junk, you feel better and more relaxed in your surroundings. Purging is not only part of “spring cleaning”. It should be done consistently, year-round, and then you won’t eventually find yourself overwhelmed and wanting to pull your hair out! An organized life is a happier life.

So, where do you start?

It’s a good idea to take this task on one room at a time. Start with the ‘easiest’ room (so you don’t get discouraged right from the get-go). This will help you start to build momentum. You’ll be more motivated as you go when you start to reap the rewards. Give yourself a deadline for each room or space to prevent procrastination. We all know how easy it is to tell yourself that you’ll get to it ‘tomorrow’.

It can be hard to ‘let go’ of things. It’s so easy to convince yourself that something still fits or that you still have lots of use for something, but a good rule of thumb is this: if you haven’t worn it or used it for six months or longer, you’re likely not going to use it in the next six months either. And don’t feel guilty getting rid of more sentimental things, like cards or gifts that you don’t use or need. If it’s just taking up space or collecting dust, it’s better to throw things out or donate them. Free yourself!

It’s a great idea to set things aside in areas designated as garbage, things to sell, and donations.

For bigger ticket items, such as furniture, mattresses, or appliances, you know if it’s time to upgrade. Maybe it’s time to go shopping for something new!

And what do you do when you have piles of junk or things that you can’t dispose of in your apartment garbage room or through the city disposal service? You call a junk removal company to take care of it for you!

For junk removal in Vancouver, call us today at 604-765-DUMP (3867).

Electronic Waste, better known as E-Waste, is a worldwide problem. E-Waste includes televisions, computers, mobile devices, gaming consoles, printers, electrical components, and wires etc.

In 2017, Canada generated over 638,000 tonnes of E-Waste. This number is expected to rise in the near future due to consumer demand. In 2025, the estimated total weight of E-Waste in Canada and America is 9.25 million metric tonnes!

Since E-Waste is banned from many landfills, most cities have recycling depots where E-Waste can be dropped off and be properly and responsibly recycled.

Accra, Ghana is home to one of the world’s largest E-Waste recycling facilities, which accepts approximately 250,000 tonnes of E-Waste yearly.

Many E-Waste items have valuable metals in them such as gold and silver. The plastic and metal can be recycled and made into other products. There are also harmful materials such as lead, cadmium, and chromium to name a few.

So next time you clean out your desk drawers that are full of old electronics or upgrade to the latest gadget, think twice about where they will end up. Do the environmentally friendly thing and recycle them!

Dunbar Disposal will ALWAYS recycle your E-Waste the right way! To conveniently get rid of your E-Waste in Vancouver with confidence that you are protecting the environment, call us at 604-765-3867 or request a quote online for junk pickup!

We also serve other areas of the Lower Mainland, including Surrey, Delta, Richmond, Ladner, and Tsawwassen for junk removal.

We serve all communities in Vancouver Downtown, East Vancouver, and Vancouver Westside, including: Dunbar, UBC, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Southlands, Point Grey, South Granville, Shaughnessy, Yaletown, Fairview, Oakridge, Cambie, Fraser, Renfrew, Gastown, Collingwood, Grandview, South Vancouver, Marpole & more.
